I was chatting with a friend who lives in New England recently and we were both feeling brutalized by our current winter season. It has definitely been a tough one. I saw somewhere that many states in the US saw colder temperatures and more snow than in previous years. In Detroit, we had snow on the ground from Thanksgiving to the week of Christmas (please do not get me started on not having snow at Christmas) and then from New Years to mid-February. I am currently in a “I’m only shoveling if I absolutely have to” mood. (Sorry, neighbors.) We also had three consecutive weeks in 2026 of below freezing temperatures. ::laughs nervously:: Like I said, brutal.
Now we are oscillating between winter and hints of spring. Last weekend it was sunny and in the 50’s followed by a temperature drop and snow. This week should see temperatures in the 60s and maybe even 70s followed by snow in the forecast for next weekend. Will it actually snow? Honestly, who knows. Spring is such a tease.
With the end of February and beginning of March, I feel like we all collectively start to look forward to the calendar and see the light at the end of the winter tunnel. Quite literally too, after the winter solstice in December, we gain more daylight with each passing day. And tomorrow is Daylight Saving Time where we will spring our clocks an hour ahead. ::cries:: We are also only a couple of weeks until the first official day of spring! (March 20th, but who’s counting?) While our weather may not fully reflect spring yet, getting into March always brings a bit of fresh air into my life knowing that there are less cold and blistery days ahead.
Spring things I am looking forward to this year:
- More sunshine (but NOT the “springing” ahead of the clock)
- Opening my windows to air the winter out
- Balmy days that continue to melt the lingerings of brutal cold
- First peek of tulips and daffodils in my yard
- Return of bird song
- Cadbury Eggs (yum)
- Pastel colors everywhere
- Outside walks
- Fresh flowers
- A BFF travel adventure
With spring, the earth is waking up from its winter hibernation. It’s a new start. It can also be one for humans too. As I have started to live according to the seasons, e.g. I’m wintering in winter, I have truly come to love this time of year. My favorite season is still autumn but next comes spring. I love seeing nature come alive again, and I feel like a part of me comes back alive too. Spring is a hopeful season, when after the darkness of winter days are behind us, we finally bask in more light and just like nature around us, grow back into ourselves.
I hope the dear spring sun shines some light on you this season.
What are you looking forward to this spring?
