When I look back on my writing journey, my memory likes to trick me into thinking there was a period of time when I didn’t write. But this is just simply not true. The kind of writing I’ve accomplished in my life has definitely varied throughout the years though.
As a young person, I thoroughly enjoyed my English classes in school that were filled with reading books and story writing. I vividly remember a series of adventure stories I wrote in middle school that I was always excited to share with my 8th grade English teacher. The memory of almost crying in front of my sophomore English teacher when she gave me positive feedback on a story still makes me a bit emotional decades later. While it was this creative writing that went into hibernation as I got older, I didn’t just stop writing. I just wrote different things.
After graduating from high school, my writing focus turned to academics- I wrote more research papers than I did stories about a pre-teen treasure hunter. If I wasn’t writing a paper for class, I was probably writing a post for the latest internet blog. I can’t even begin to remember all of the different blog sites I was on over the years! And if it wasn’t a research paper or a blog, it was probably a social media post. A few years ago, I even started a lifestyle website no one visited (mainly because I was too scared to tell anyone about it).
Between academic writing, blogs, and social media, one of the things I greatly missed throughout the past 20 plus years was creative writing. I may not have been actively writing creatively, but story ideas frequently came to me. Many years ago, I read “Big Magic” by Elizabeth Gilbert, where she discusses that stories will find the person who can share it with the world. If an idea keeps rumbling around in your brain, it probably means you are meant to bring it to life, and if you don’t, it will find another who will. I have had endless inspirations for stories over the years. While some have come and gone, there are a few ideas that have stuck around.
When I thought about launching a writing website, having a dedicated place for all of those stories and ideas to go was the most exciting part. The most terrifying part is people actually reading what I write! It doesn’t stop me from dreaming that this site becomes a great collection of my creative stories and random ideas that I get to share with whoever is out there reading.
My writing may not always be the most poetic or grammatically correct, but I hope to sometimes bring you inspiration or laughter (I just need some funny ideas to find me, ha). Or I hope to just provide a break from life in the time it takes you to read a musing or story.
Launching this site has been both the most exciting and terrifying thing I’ve done in a while. I hope you’ll join me on this writing journey as I figure out my voice and what I want to share.
For now, though, while I may not have always felt like a writer over the years, I have always been one. And I can’t wait to finally share my writings with you!
You can purchase “Big Magic” through my Bookshop.org bookshop. Please note I will receive compensation for your purchase through my shop.
